For our October adventure, we trekked out to beautiful Sand Hollow State Park in Hurricane, Utah for Trail Hero, October 4th – 9th! 2021 marks the 6th year for this annual rock sports event that brings in thousands of off-road enthusiasts to the 4-wheel drive mecca that is Sand Hollow. Trail Hero is uniquely amazing as it caters to a wide spectrum of off-road lifestyles with the purpose to raise awareness for keeping public land open. From ATVs and UTVs to Jeeps, built crawlers, and Ultra4 buggies, Trail Hero has it all! The mix creates an atmosphere of high-horsepower action and adventure that will quickly satisfy your thirst yet leave you itching for more!

The weeklong event features guided trail rides, off-road competitions, a vendor expo, as well as daily and nightly entertainment, including live music, prizes, games, and more! There’s even a golf tournament at the Sand Hollow Resort! Plus, Sand Hollow State Park is an off-roader’s paradise with over 6,000 acres of amazing OHV usage that includes rocky and slick rock trail riding, challenging rock crawling obstacles, massive sand dunes, and incredible panoramic views in all directions. And let’s not forget the park’s beautiful reservoir that’s open for swimming, fishing, boating, and other water sports. The park also features full hook-up RV sites, primitive camping, and bathhouses, so you can stay on-site without missing any of the fun.

One of the coolest things about Trail Hero is seeing the big crawlers and high horsepower rigs! Several competitions happen throughout the week where you can watch the big boys in action, including the Supercrawl Rock Crawling Championships, the Tuff Country Challenge, and the Rock Cross.

There were competitions for UTVs too! Not only was High Lifter a presenting sponsor of Trail Hero, but they also brought the High Lifter Events team to Sand Hollow! High Lifter hosted a number of games and activities catered to UTV enthusiasts, including drag racing, an obstacle course, and even a blindfolded relay. High Lifter also is known for giving out some great prizes. Attendees could play spin the wheel, musical chairs, and more for some cool gear and sxs parts.

Vendor Row was jampacked with several great companies, including several aftermarket parts brands like BFGoodrich, Rugged Radios, RCV Performance Products, Rigid Industries, and of course High Lifter, just to name a few. If you didn’t know, we love checking out aftermarket accessories!

Can-Am was on the scene as well! They brought the new Maverick X3 X rs and the new Commander. Would have loved to take the X rs for a spin through the Utah rocks, maybe next time Can-Am. Ha.

There were several off-road celebrities and racers in attendance. You never know who you might run into. One thing’s for sure, we always seem to catch our buddy Dustin Jones out and about.

We had the opportunity to tag along on a UTV Sports Magazine shoot too! It was our first ride out at the event, and UTV Sports had Pro UTV Racers Sierra Romo, and her Dad Randy Romo, along with her mom, plus HCR Racing and Pro Armor in the group ride lineup. I hopped in with Pete from Pro Armor and enjoyed the ride! We hit some sketchy stuff, but we made it.

For our second big ride during the event, we paired up with Scott Smith from High Lifter and were joined by RCV Performance Parts, XTC Power Products, Moorhead Off-Road Engineering, and RZR Life. With the help of a couple seasoned locals, we hit some of the more technical trails Sand Hollow has to offer. Each driver’s skills were put to the test as our local friends helped guide them up the slick rock obstacles, finding the best line for the vehicle.

Scott is well known for taking on any challenge. With years of experience behind the wheel of a Polaris RZR, he’s always pushing the limits to see what these UTVs can do. On one of the sickest climbs of the weekend, he got sideways and wedged down in a hole. It was quite the predicament! It took 3 winches rotating, pulling singly in 3 directions to get him out of this hole, it was one of the craziest winch outs we’ve ever seen!!

Travel Tip: We got rained out for most of the day on Friday. While a few hardcore enthusiasts rode in the pouring rain, many of us UTV guys waited it out and took an evening ride after it cleared. Now, we’re talking about some heavy rain! So, it was the perfect opportunity to hit up Zion National Park. Zion is only about 32 miles from Sand Hollow and is a world-renowned tourist attraction. After our visit, I could see why. If you have a little extra time on your trip to Sand Hollow, we recommend fitting it in!

All in all, Trail Hero was a huge success! What an awesome week of riding at beautiful Sand Hollow, hanging out with friends, and making new ones! Getting to see the big horsepower rigs in action was definitely awesome, plus watching all the drivers conquer the impossible climbs was so impressive. If you like everything four-wheel drive, adrenaline-pumping action, kick ass trail riding, and beautiful scenery, then Trail Hero is for you. You’ve got to put this event on your list of to-dos; you’ll probably be back every year you can! So, we’ll plan on seeing you when we’re back in Sand Hollow next year for Trail Hero 2022! Until then, Ride on!
