Committed to customer satisfaction, constant innovation, and superior engineering, Kymco is a brand you can trust; these guys have been producing high quality products in the power sports industry for a long time. We found Kymco at the High Lifter Mud Nationals in Jacksonville, TX earlier this year and spoke with Al Golding, Kymco USA’s product development manager, who gave us the scoop on their latest model UTVs and some insight on the company’s history.
Founded in 1963 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan the Kwang Yang Motor Co, Ltd started out as an OE builder for major power sports manufacturers. They originally made products for Honda for 30 years before launching their own brand scooters and motorcycles. By 1970 the company built their first scooter and by 1979 had a research and development team that worked extensively for years on quality and technological innovation. In 1992 the company began marketing under the Kymco brand and had expanded overseas by 93’. Kymco is now one of the largest scooter and motorcycle manufacturer in Taiwan and the 5th largest in the world, exporting their products to 88 countries worldwide.
Very popular in Europe, they were the first brand in Europe to road homologate off road vehicles. Competing with major brands like Polaris, Can-Am, Kawasaki, and Arctic Cat, wasn’t easy but their focus to have the finest quality products at a great value has led them to become an industry leader. As the popularity of side by sides grew, Kymco entered the US market in the early 2000s with a durable UTV line up from their midsize 450i UXV up to their full size 700i LE UXV. In the late 2000s they partnered with major companies, Kawasaki and BMW, which outsourced to Kymco for some of their products. Kymco currently manufactures engines for the BMW G 450X Enduro and had a hand in the first scooter in the European marketplace, the Kawasaki J300 which was based on a Kymco Downtown 300i.
