Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure
April 11th – 14th
UTV Takeover continues to expand their popular UTV events across the nation, this time the event team took over Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure in Grundy, Virginia April 11th – 14th for some awesome side by side riding and a jampacked schedule of event activities. A few quick showers over the weekend didn’t scare folks from attending as many riders from across the region and locally came out for the first annual event in Grundy.
UTV Takeover’s rise began in the Oregon Sand Dunes at Coos Bay. Since their explosive success of their first several events founders Jim McIntire and Steve McCarthy Jr have been pushing the envelope to branch out to riding areas across the country, literally taking over with first-rate UTV events in riding communities. Teaming up with Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure to take over the Spearhead Trails Coal Canyon trail system was a huge hit for the region; many attendees expressed how much they were looking forward to coming back to the event in the years to come.
From the Mud Bog and UTV Barrel Race to the Tire Toss Competition and daily group rides, there was hardly any downtime between the abundance of entertainment and event activities for attendees to spectate and participate in. UTV Takeover did a great job with a loaded schedule of fun events!
One of our favorite event activities was Hillfest, the UTV hill climb. If was fun to watch as contestants ripped up the gnarly hill for the fastest time, they even allowed dirt bikes to participate.
At vendor row you could find a variety of food vendors as well as aftermarket accessory companies like Seizmik displaying their latest products. It was great to check out the latest UTV products and the variety of food was awesome.
In vendor row you could also spot three new Mahindra ROXOR units. Demo rides were offered to attendees, so of course we had to take one of the ROXOR machines for a spin.
You could also find the big UTV Takeover tent in the vendor area, it was the hub for many event activities including raffles, the Show-N-Shine competitions, group campfires and several games. They even had live music from a local band on Friday and DJ Bam Entertainment DJing all weekend long to keep the party rockin’.
Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure was a great place to hold the event; the venue has cabins, full hook-up pull-through RV sites and plenty of primitive camping space. Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure is nestled in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia in Poplar Gap Park, the view from the campground is absolutely epic. It was great to get up each morning and look out off the mountain, you may even spot some elk; herds of elk are known to come up right into the campgrounds. The venue also features a bathhouse with showers, restrooms, a vending area and laundry mat.
Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure’s location is prime for off-road riding as it is located at the trailhead for the Spearhead Trails Coal Canyon ATV/OHV/Mountain Bike Trail. The multi-trail system offers hundreds of miles of riding and is continually expanding. The system connects to the town of Grundy and to the Ridgeview Trail System as well as the many other trails systems the Spearhead Trails have to offer. We even heard rumors of the construction of a connection trail to the Hatfield McCoy trail system in the near future. The Coal Canyon trail system offers a wide variety of riding for all skill levels, many routes have quick elevation change from the creek bottoms to mountain tops offering panoramic views and are frequented by a ton of wildlife. We recommend putting this trail system on your list of places to ride.
All in all, UTV Takeover Virginia was a success, we had so much fun at the event; we encourage you to put UTV Takeover Virginia 2020 on your calendar. With the combination of a great place to ride, great people and an awesome event, we imagine this ride will quickly grow in the coming years. Make sure to check into the UTV Takeover website for the announcement of next year’s event.
